We are delighted to announce that Steven Allen has been promoted (January 2024) to the role of Project Manager within our dedicated team of Project Management professionals.
Steven joined Wakemans in May 2022 as a Graduate Project Manager and has worked diligently to gain his promotion. Originally, Steven came from a background in topographical surveying and project coordination in the utilities and infrastructure industry. Whilst with us Steven has honed his skills and is currently working on a wide range of construction projects with a number of our developer partners.
Matt McWalter Head of our Project Management Division comments: “Steven has demonstrated a high-level of versatility easily fitting in with the team and progressing within his job to achieve this promotion, I am really happy to see him develop within his role”.

Emma Bridgewood re-joined Wakemans in 2022 as a Senior Quantity Surveyor / Project Manager, she has been promoted to Associate Director and works within the Industrial and Logistics sector team. Dean Watson, Chief Executive comments “Emma is of considerable value to Wakemans, she is a highly effective communicator at all levels and highly respected across the company, we were delighted when she returned to us and equally delighted to have rewarded her hard work and dedication with this well-deserved promotion”.

I am delighted to have received this promotion and recognition. Working within the Industrial and Logistics sector throws up its own set of unique challenges and I look forward to continuing to work with colleagues to achieve successful project outcomes and forge strong working relationships”.
Jordan Hughes came to Wakemans in 2017 as a Graduate Project Surveyor and it was his first job working full time as a Quantity Surveyor. Jordan works within the Industrial and Logistics team and has gained a significant amount of experience whilst working with us in this sector.
Jordan was promoted to the role of Senior Surveyor in December 2023. Divisional Director Andrew Hancock says, “We have seen Jordan progress his career whilst working for us, and we are pleased to see him achieve this senior role. May I extend my congratulations to Jordan – a well-deserved promotion”. Jordan is seeking to pass his RICS APC next year and become a Chartered member of the RICS. Jordan comments “I would like to thank Wakemans for the opportunity to develop my professional career with them, their support has assisted me to grow in confidence to effectively manage projects and teams as a part of my responsibilities, I look forward to continuing to grow in my current role”.
Wakemans say farewell to Dawn Archer
At the end of September, we waved farewell to our colleague Dawn Archer, who decided to retire after serving 21 years. Beginning her long tenure working part-time in our reception before joining the accounts team, Dawn was a much-loved member of staff. We will certainly miss her smiling face and happy demeanour around the office. We wish her all the best in her future adventures touring Europe with partner Tony.
Wakemans laid on an informal retirement party for all of Dawn’s colleagues and friends at our offices in Birmingham.

Wakemans welcome Yanique Beckford
We welcomed Yanique Beckford to the Accounts Team in October. Yanique has previously worked in a range of Client-facing roles and is an enthusiastic addition to Wakemans.
Yanique has always loved mathematics and having completed accountancy training she exclaims that she has always wanted to work with figures. Yanique is fitting in well with her colleagues and having landed her ideal job she is looking forward to progressing her career with Wakemans.
Yanique says ‘I am so pleased to have finally achieved my dream of working in an accounts role and everyone at Wakemans has been so welcoming.’
We are delighted to welcome new colleagues to Wakemans, as Assistant Building Surveyors Kate Tatchell and Naomi Pulfer join our Building Surveying Division.
Since graduating with a degree in Property Development and Planning Naomi had gained around 2 years of experience in the property and construction industry before spending a year out travelling in Central America. On her return to the UK Naomi secured a position with Wakemans with the aim of continuing to gain experience in her chosen profession and to attain Chartership with the RICS.
Naomi is settling well into her new role and states, “I am looking forward to developing my career with Wakemans, I am already busy with a variety of projects across a range of sectors, and I enjoy the variety of work with every day being slightly different”. Naomi is based at our Birmingham Headquarters.
Kate has approached her career from a completely different angle, as she started out working as a Personal Trainer – Strength and Conditioning Coach. Kate took a graduate diploma to convert her degree in Interior Architecture and move into the Building Surveying profession where she has worked within the residential sector for the past four and a half years.
Like Naomi, Kate is also looking towards gaining chartership via her APC with the RICS. “Wakemans have a history of successfully seeing people through the APC process and I liked the idea of working within a larger team of Building Surveyors, on a varied portfolio of work”. Kate is based in our Bristol office and strengthens the team working in the Southwest region.

Wakemans are delighted to have been retained by St. Modwen Logistics on Phase 2 of St. Modwen Park, Derby. The remit for our professional expertise includes Cost and Project Management, Employer’s Agent, Principal Designer and Health & Safety Advisor services.
The £59m industrial and logistics development comprises of c.350,000 sq ft delivered across five industry-leading warehouse units, commencing with a new 145,000 sq ft warehouse which has already been pre-let. The units will be constructed to St. Modwen Logistics’ ‘Swan Standard’ for sustainable construction, meaning they will be highly energy efficient and come with an EPC A+ rating. All five units will also benefit from the installation of enhanced rooftop solar panels, thereby helping occupiers to reduce their operational costs and have been designed to BREEAM Excellent accreditation.
St. Modwen Park Derby will also see the ongoing creation of a new riverside nature corridor with the planting of thousands of trees and shrubs to surround the park, an initiative that forms part of St. Modwen Logistics’ commitment to providing biodiversity as a part of its development strategy, assisting its occupiers to achieve their own sustainability goals, whilst providing a green and pleasant environment for occupiers and their employees at the Park.

It has been an exciting and busy year so far for the whole team at Wakemans so the Directors arranged a motivational get together to celebrate our recent project achievements. The event brought everyone together and was a great success. Wakemans like to create regular opportunities for team building so people can connect and interact in meaningful ways, outside of the usual meetings. It was also a great chance for some of our newest members of the team to get to know one another.
“The event proved highly successful, the weather was kind to us and our entire team appreciated a relaxed afternoon in what may be the last of the summer heat, enjoying some good company and conversation at our HQ in Edgbaston” says John Woodhall – Executive Chairman.
It is of huge benefit to support your staff in their fledgling years, at Wakemans we aim to encourage young blood and progression within our company by nurturing our staff through a programme of development and allowing students to experience the world of work. This is of paramount importance within the world of professional construction, often overlooked in favour of more obvious and highly promoted career choices.
We would like to congratulate James Edmunds a member of our Building Surveying division, who has just passed his RICS Assessment of Professional Competence to become a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS).
James joined us as a Building Surveying graduate in 2021. James was looking for a company to develop his experience and attain professional qualifications and since joining us James has achieved both. Working on a variety of commercial projects he has certainly had a good grounding in his chosen career. James comments, “I have worked hard to achieve my MRICS status, and I have benefited from the knowledge I have attained from both project experience and that gleaned working alongside my colleagues. I am looking forward to continuing to flourish in my profession”.
Wakemans also aims to encourage undergraduate students who are studying for an RICS accredited degree. Our trainee Building Surveyor Lexie Siziba has just completed a year’s placement working full time for us, this has given her a valuable insight into the world of Building Surveying work and has prepared the ground for her to complete her degree in 2023. “I have enjoyed my time here, and it has proven an invaluable experience. I am also delighted that I have received a job offer with Wakemans on completion of my studies”. Peter Wadley Head of Building Surveying comments, “Lexie has proved to be an eager trainee, it has been a pleasure to work with her and encourage her development over the last year, we wish her every success in her last year of studies and look forward to welcoming her to the team next year”.
Having completed his second year of studies at Nottingham Trent University, Josh Guest has started work for us as the next student undertaking the student placement role. Wakemans welcome Josh to the Building Surveying Department, and we look forward to equipping him with valuable work experience.

Matthew McWalter – Head of Project Management
Matthew steps up as Head of Project Management. Matthew joined the company in July 2016 as a Senior Project Manager. Our project management team work on a varied range of projects across all market sectors and this service is a key component of the Wakemans offering. Matt comments “I am delighted that my commitment to my work has been recognised and I look forward to continuing to grow and strengthen our Project Management team, Project Management can be a vary varied role and I enjoy the challenges it throws up along the way. I work alongside a great team, and I am particularly looking to grow and drive our Project Management service offering forwards.”
Steve Howard – Associate Director
Steve has been promoted to an Associate Director, he currently works within our Leisure team and has been engaged on numerous projects for Travelodge Hotels Limited across the UK, assisting the hotelier to strengthen their brand and develop their UK portfolio of hotels. Steve joined the company as a Trainee in 2002 and has obtained his degree whilst in our employment. “I look forward to joining the management team and supporting Wakemans who have provided me with so many opportunities. I am proud to be part of a business with such a strong legacy and hope to contribute to further successes.”
Mehran Salari – Associate Director
Mehran is promoted to an Associate Director he started work as a Trainee in 2005 benefiting from our Undergraduate training and mentoring programme obtaining his BSc (Hons) degree in 2010, and currently working towards his RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC). Mehran comments: “Wakemans have supported me through my degree, gaining valuable work experience during this time has kick started my career by putting the theory directly into practice. I really appreciate the opportunities that have been made available to me and look forward to fulfilling my role as Associate Director.”
Ben Pugh – Associate Director
Ben who works with our Industrial and Logistics team has also become an Associate Director of the Company. Ben has been engaged as a Project Manager and Cost Consultant on several large and complex infrastructure schemes to provide remediated land with all necessary service connections and roadworks on brownfield sites prior to construction. Ben has recently been involved in the major re-development of the Longbridge site in Birmingham and St Modwen Industrial and Logistics Park, Derby. Ben joined Wakemans as a graduate in 2006 and has built his career with us. “Since joining Wakemans as a Graduate I have worked across many market sectors of the industry which has enabled me to gain confidence and invaluable experience. I am looking forward to continuing to develop within the team and I am pleased to have been promoted to Associate level. I am glad my dedication to work has paid off and I hope to continue to grow within Wakemans,”Says Ben.
Dan Dafforn – Principal Surveyor
Dan has been promoted to the role of Principal Surveyor and works with the Industrial and Logistics team. Dan is a highly focussed member of the Industrial and Logistics team and has worked in the roles of Cost Consultant and Project Manager on some interesting projects to develop large business parks for logistics and industrial tenants. Dan has worked for Wakemans for 20 years and joined the company as a Trainee undertaking his degree whilst gaining valuable work experience. “I have built my career in professional construction and whilst the role can be challenging at times, the work has proved rewarding and interesting, I look forward to continue to develop my role within Wakemans” says Dan.
Gerard Belfield – Principal Surveyor
Gerard’s work is currently focused on education providing new facilities and extension projects for some local schools and academies. Gerard is a highly experienced Cost Consultant having worked within the construction and property business for 33 years. Gerard has chosen to focus on construction cost engineering through his career and is a highly capable individual managing multi-million-pound schemes. “Wakemans is a multi-disciplinary consultancy and I enjoy working on a variety of projects and adapting my skills to offer our Clients a bespoke service, I continue to thrive on the range of projects that I am engaged upon.”
Kayleigh Davenport – Principal Designer, CDM Advisor
Kayleigh Davenport has been promoted to the role of Senior Principal Designer rewarding her growth and commitment since joining the Health & Safety team in 2021. Kayleigh has worked within the construction industry since 2015, she has a degree in architecture which coupled with her experience in the realm of Health & Safety makes her an invaluable member of the Health & Safety team. Kayleigh is highly qualified with several health & safety focussed professional affiliations including NEBOSH, Tech IOSH, and AaPS. Kayleigh is looking forward to developing her career with Wakemans. Kayleigh reflects “I am really enjoying my role at Wakemans, and though it is throwing up a range of challenges, my job is pushing me to develop my career. Steve has joined as a Graduate Project Manager to support the growth of our Project Management services. He has experience working as a Topographical Surveyor on a range of projects including HS2 and as a project coordinator in the strategic land acquisitions sector of the utilities and infrastructure industry. Upon the conclusion of his master’s degree, Steve is to pursue professional accreditation at Wakemans.

Emma Bridgewood – Senior Quantity Surveyor / Project Manager
Emma re- joins the team after a gap of 16 years. Emma had previously worked for Travelodge Hotels Limited in their Development team working closely with the Wakemans team on a range of projects including new build hotels. Emma is delighted to be back and has moved over to the Industrial and Logistics Team. She will be working alongside our Cost and Project Management professionals.
Emma comments “It’s great to be back and I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead of me. I have worked extensively in the Hotel and Leisure sector so Industrial and Logistics is a new sector for me. I am looking forward to getting re-acquainted with my Wakemans colleagues both old and new”.
Anthony Hayward – Graduate Building Surveyor
Anthony is working with our Building Surveyors and joined Wakemans in December 2021. Anthony has become a valued and established member of the team and works on various projects across the UK. Anthony is gaining in confidence and experience as he grows into his role.
Anthony reflects “I am enjoying my job here, and I have fitted in well with my fellow colleagues. It is a busy department, so it certainly keeps me on my toes. My work is varied and interesting and my range of work experience is growing. I am looking forward to developing my career here at Wakemans”.
Liam Hogan – Project Manager
Liam will be working with Wakemans Director, Shaun Baugh on Travelodge alongside and assisting with other Travelodge projects as required. Liam has come from a contracting background and worked on new build and refurbishment projects where he was employed as a Site Manager and more recently as a Construction Manager / Project Lead.

Gary McEvans – Senior Principal Designer
Gary joins our Health & Safety team as a Senior Principal Designer. He is based in the South West and is supporting our Clients in the Bristol, South Wales and Somerset areas. Gary supports a number of our high profile Clients on a range of schemes including some major Logistics and Industrial Parks.
“I am excited to be a new member of the Health & Safety Team at Wakemans and grow the business in the Southwest. Having worked in just about all the sectors of the construction industry from a school extension to a £71 million waste treatment plant, I am ready and waiting for my next challenge.”
Andrew Newman –Project Quantity Surveyor
Andrew Newman is based in our Bristol office and has been with us since December 2021. Andrew is a Cost Consultant and is assisting our Bristol team deliver a range of Infrastructure, Industrial and Logistics projects in the Southwest. He is also assisting our Regional Director Tony Hooper delivering our Expert Witness services. Andrew is an experienced Quantity Surveyor having worked in the role for 8 years and is keen to gain more experience acting in the role of Employer’s Agent.

Brad Taylor – Head of Health & Safety
Brad joins the team as Head of Wakemans Health & Safety Division. Brad will be based in Birmingham and will manage the delivery of our Principal Designer, CDM, Health and Safety services across the Birmingham and Bristol offices. He is keen to grow the team, further establish our presence in the marketplace and promote our Principal Designer and Health Safety services.
Brad comments “I am looking forward to growing and moving the team forward. We are already working alongside the Wakemans team to deliver some major schemes for valued Clients, I will be promoting our services and growing our presence nationwide.”
