Slate Quay, (© Cei Llechi) is Harbour Front is Successfully Completed

Wakemans were retained by the Caernarfon Harbour Trust as Cost Consultants / Quantity Surveyors on this £5.8m leisure project to transform derelict buildings into an attractive waterfront public realm for the local community and visitors to enjoy.

Located close to Caernarfon Castle the historic quayside was originally a key trading post for the transportation of slate from Dyffryn Nantlle around the world. However, the site had been largely neglected for many years and many historic buildings lay derelict.

The project presented numerous challenges, and it was important to conserve the existing buildings on site, including the Grade II* listed Harbour Offices, as well as introducing new build elements.  The transformed Slate Quay now has a mix of 19 retail units, 3 holiday lets and an interactive interpretation area.

Caernarfon Harbour Trust partnered with Galeri Caernarfon Cyf.  to manage the project, with funding being provided by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Welsh Government, Visit Wales, Cadw and Gwynedd Council.

The completed development will be managed by the Galeri Caernarfon Cyf and has successfully transformed the area, © Cei Llechi (Slate Quay) will showcase local talent and creating new job opportunities, as well as providing a much-needed facelift to a popular area of Caernarfon.
