A unique multi-million pound regeneration to a historic harbour front in Caernarfon
Project Overview
This project transformed a derelict site, including its historic buildings, into a vibrant waterfront public realm and tourist attraction. The work involved a careful mix of restoration and new development, combining the conservation of existing structures on site – most notably the Grade II* listed Harbour Offices with the introduction of new build elements. As a result, the transformed Slate Quay now boasts a diverse mix of 19 retail units, 3 holiday lets and an interactive interpretation area. Wakemans acted as both a Project Manager and Cost Consultant on this regeneration project.
The scheme was delivered through a partnership between Caernarfon Harbour Trust and Galeri Caernarfon Cyf, who managed the project with funding provided by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Welsh Government, Visit Wales, Cadw and Gwynedd Council. Now managed by Galeri Caernarfon Cyf, Cei Llechi (Slate Quay) showcases local talent and has created new job opportunities, while giving a much-needed facelift to this key tourist area of Caernarfon.
