Delivering Infrastructure-Sensitive Development in Bermondsey
Project Overview
Travelodge Bermondsey represents a modern approach to budget hospitality, combining innovative design, sustainability, and local integration. As a newly built hotel, the development introduces contemporary accommodation options, including Travelodge’s upgraded “Super Rooms” and an on-site Bar Café, enhancing both guest comfort and convenience. These features reflect a growing demand for affordable yet higher-quality hotel experiences in urban locations. Wakemans played a key role as Tenant’s Agent, supporting Travelodge in delivering a unique, yet complex newbuild.
The project has also contributed positively to the local economy, creating 30 new jobs and supporting employment within the Bermondsey area. Its architectural design stands out through the use of innovative brickwork techniques, which not only give the building a distinctive visual identity but also respond sensitively to the surrounding urban context.
Due to its location near key railway infrastructure, the development required detailed coordination with Network Rail. Agreements were necessary to ensure that construction and ongoing operations did not disrupt nearby mainline services or the historic Bermondsey railway arches, highlighting the complexity of building in dense, infrastructure-heavy environments.
Sustainability was a central consideration throughout the project. The hotel incorporates several environmentally conscious features, including energy-efficient LED lighting, photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof to generate renewable energy, and air source heat pumps to reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, biodiversity-focused green roofs have been implemented to support urban wildlife and improve environmental performance.
Overall, Travelodge Bermondsey demonstrates how thoughtful design, sustainability, and strategic planning can deliver a functional, attractive, and socially beneficial hospitality development.
