Project Overview
Gladstone’s Library is one of the UK’s finest residential and only Prime Ministerial library with many characteristic and historical features throughout the building. This project is the first major repair work that has been done to the library in its’ 125-year history.
The works included the refurbishment of the library roof, repairs to the drainage at the front of the building, and ground stabilisation measures to protect this Grade I listed landmark. To address ongoing structural movement, specialist ground injection techniques were used to underpin the foundations and improve the building’s long-term stability.
In addition, a programme of sympathetic structural repairs was carried out to reinforce and safeguard the historic fabric of the building for future generations. The project was later expanded to include the restoration of the Victorian Cupola above the main library roof, involving the replacement of sections of the oak frame, repairs to the ornate leadwork, and the refurbishment of the weathervane.
Throughout the works, the library remained fully operational, ensuring that services continued uninterrupted and disruption to day-to-day activities was kept to a minimum.
