Delivering Expansion and Refurbishment Works Within a Live Manufacturing Environment
Project overview
This project centred on the extension and comprehensive remodelling of the Pilkington Automotive site, aimed at enhancing operational capacity while modernising existing facilities. The scheme involved the refurbishment of both office and warehouse spaces, bringing them up to current standards and improving overall functionality for staff and logistics operations.
A significant element of the development was the construction of a 72,000 sq ft extension, integrated into the existing 250,000 sq ft facility. This substantial addition was designed to support increased production demands and future growth, ensuring the site remains fit for purpose within a competitive manufacturing environment.
A key challenge of the project was delivering the works within a live operational setting. Construction activities were carefully phased and managed to ensure Pilkington’s manufacturing processes continued uninterrupted. Close coordination with the client and stakeholders was essential to maintain productivity while meeting stringent programme deadlines.
In addition to the main building works, the project included a range of external improvements. These comprised the creation of new car parking facilities, reconfiguration of the service yard to improve traffic flow and efficiency, and the development of external storage areas. A new gatehouse was also constructed, enhancing site security and providing a more controlled and professional entrance to the facility.
Overall, the project successfully delivered a modernised, expanded facility with improved infrastructure, tailored to support Pilkington Automotive’s ongoing operational needs and long-term growth.
